"British Steel Festival 3"    -    The Underworld    -    Camden Town    -    Londra    -    26/04/2008 




Arriviamo alle 5 ora locale all’Underworld di Camden Town che si trova esattamente difronte all’uscita della metropolitana. Entriamo e nella prima sala troviamo il classico Pub inglese con bancone centrale, tutto in legno e sulla parte destra la zona merchandising con alcuni stand tra i quali quello degli Elixir, dove abbiamo conosciuto l’intera famiglia Denton. Erano presenti allo stand la madre di Phil Denton (persona gentilissima come del resto lo è Phil), la moglie e i suoi due figli. C’è anche lo stand dei Witchfynde dove si possono trovare le varie t-shirt e tutti i cd escluso “Lord Of Sin” che poi è l’unico che mi manca (logicamente ho il vinile). Al loro stand si poteva trovare anche il cd dei Redline “Ignition” e quello dei Lyadrive “Another Time, Another Place” e il nuovo album “Post Millennium Blues” nonchè il vinile in edizione limitata di “ATAP”.
All’ultimo stand c’era Ian Toomey dei Bitches Sin che, oltre ad avere tutti gli album in cd della band, aveva in anteprima il nuovo album “Uduvudu” e sullo stesso stand c’era pure il libro di John Tucker “Suzie Smiled… The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal”! Entriamo nella seconda sala, dove si svolge il concerto e mi accorgo che è già iniziato il concerto dei Redline. Mentre mi avvicino al palco per scattare una foto ( a propostito di foto, questa volta lascio la mia Canon nelle mani della bravissima LadySnake della quale mi fido ciecamente e così io mi godo il concerto da vero metalhead che si rispetti!) mi sento chiamare e poi abbracciare, mi giro e vedo Paul Taylor degli Elixir e lì vicino tutto il resto della band. Paul mi si avvicina all’orecchio e mi dice che ha un regalo per me, si tratta del loro vinile in edizione limitata di “The Idol” completamente autografato con dediche della band nei miei confronti. Io ne sono entusiasta e gli dico che per me è il più bel regalo che avessi potuto ricevere! Saluto gli Elixir e mi metto in prima fila a vedere il concerto dei grandi Redline autori di un Hard Rock d’altri tempi (li avevo già visti all’HRH). Inizia “Twistin The Knife” e osservo con piacere che l’ugola di Liam Doherty (con la classica T-shirt Harley/Ignition) è in splendida forma e lo stesso si può dire del chitarrista A.D. e dei due ex-Bitches Sin Marck Biddescombe batteria e Martin Orum basso. Segue “Cold Silence”, “No Limits”, “Heaven’s Gate”, “Straight Between The Eyes” (questo titolo mi ricorda un altro grande disco di HR…). La sezione ritmica è perfetta e stranamente questo “The Underworld” ha un’ottima acustica, cosa non facile da trovare in locali simili. Ed ecco che arriva la nota dolente dello show, ovvero viene segata l’ultima canzone, che poi è il loro inno, “King Of The Mountain” un pezzo HR bellissimo che io adoro e infatti sono rimasto proprio con l’amaro in bocca! Sia chiaro che questa cancellazione non è dipesa dalla band ma dagli orari rigidissimi del locale che andavano rispettati assolutamente!!! Sono comunque felice di aver seguito un’ ottima prestazione di un’ottima band.
Finiti i Redline ce ne torniamo nella zona Bar/Merchandising ed io vado a comprare il vinile dei Lyadrive e il loro nuovo album nonché la t-shirt del festival (obbligatoria)!
Rientriamo sotto il palco per l’inizio dei Lyadrive, band riformatasi dopo venti anni e che ha pubblicato adesso un nuovo album oltre ad un bellissimo vinile "The Sands Of Time : Sessions 1980-82“. in edizione limitata comprendente i loro più grandi pezzi degli eighties. Quando si vedono dal vivo band che rientrano in carreggiat dopo tutti questi anni si ha per forza qualche dubbio su come sarà la prestazione ma come inizia il concerto ogni dubbio svanisce immediatamente. Qui siamo difronte ad una super band! Attaccano con “Whitedress” seguita dalla loro storica “Another Time Another Place” dal grandissimo riff. Nick John è letteralmente scatenato e agita il microfono come fosse David Coverdale soltanto che lo deve fare in uno spazio ristrettissimo. Al temine della canzone Nick John ringrazia il pubblico e presentando il prossimo brano dice: adesso eseguiremo una cover di una band americana la quale rientra “Ad Honorem” nel movimento della New Wave Of British Heavy Metal Band”, i Riot! E John attacca “Warrior” mentre il pubblico è visibilmente entusiasta! Segue “Black Waters” ed un’altra cover stavolta di una band NWOBHM inglese: si tratta di un brano considerato da molti come uno dei più belli in assoluto dell’intero movimento inglese ovvero “One Of These Days” dei Trespass . Ricordo che questa cover era già stata eseguita dai Lyadrive ed era stata inserita nel loro Cd prodotto dal negozio inglese Vinil Tap nel 1997 e comprendeva appunto i loro brani che non erano mai stati pubblicati (con l’eccezione del loro unico singolo “Anytime”). Ed ora si prepara il gran finale con i due pezzi più belli in assoluto dei Lyadrive. Iniziamo con “Lazerwind” inclusa nel cd del 1998 “Legends of Progressive”, un brano bellissimo che dimostra a coloro che non conoscevano la band come i Lyadrive riescano a muoversi bene sia su terreni puramente HR che HM o addirittura Progmetal. Tecnicamente (come molte altre band inglesi) sono validissimi e i loro solos sono di quelli che ti restano in testa. Anche l’interpretazione di Nick Jonh non lascia spazio a dubbi, grande voce grande presenza scenica! Ed ora l’ultimo pezzo ed è l’apoteosi con “Steel Away The Night” , il loro pezzo più d’impatto. Come ho detto molte altre volte questa canzone ricorda in modo pazzesco “Fear Of The Dark” (ricordo che è stata scritta 10 anni prima) non tanto nella musica che sinceramente è assai diversa, ma nella struttura della canzone , nei cambi di tempo (vedi partenze in quarta e accelerate di chitarra varie). Anche lo stesso intro e la voce di John che iniziando pacatissima va estendendosi sempre più sull’againehhhhhhhhhhhhh (come la celeberrima Fear)…ma ascoltatela e poi mi saprete dire. Concerto finito e grande entusiasmo tra il pubblico (non poteva essere altrimenti vista la caratura della band) anche fra coloro che non avevano mai ascoltato la band. A questo punto comincio già a pensare ai Lyadrive come una delle band vincitrici del festival.
Ricordo la lunga line up: Nick John voce, Gary Wilson basso, Keith Thompson chitarra, Graham Suart, chitarra, Steve Jones Chitarra, Lee Burrows batteria, Paul Ryan chitarra, Steve Christiansen basso.
Noto anche con piacere una discreta presenza femminile e devo dire che anche qui la qualità è molto alta! I presenti non sono certo molti (dai 200 ai 250) ma dal festival più underground del pianeta non si poteva pretendere molto di più! Ci sono giapponesi, spagnoli, greci e 4 italiani!!!!!
Torniamo nuovamente al bar dove vado a comprare “Uduvudu” dei Bitches Sin e faccio due chiacchiere col grande Ian Toomey (per chi non lo conosce dico solo che ha scritto alcuni tra i più grandi assoli di sempre con suo fratello nei Bitches Sin) , mi faccio autografare il disco e la consueta foto. Ci sono anche i Redline con i quali ci eravamo sentiti spesso dopo lo scorso HRH, a loro era piaciuta molto la recensione di “Ignition” presente su From Burn to Now! Infatti l’hanno pubblicata in versione inglese pure sul loro sito. Mi dicono che verrebbero volentieri a suonare in Italia …vedremo. Nella foto che ho fatto con loro avevo in mano la birra più “Nwobhm” del mondo infatti è di “Newcastle” (città che ha sfornato alcune tra le più grandi band inglesi di sempre vedi Raven, Fist, Venom, Tygers Of Pan Tang, Mythra, ecc… diramazione della Nowbhm chiamata Nwobhmned che vuol dire New Wave Of British Heavy Metal Nord Est Division)!
Stanno per iniziare gli Elixir  e io, Gunfighter, LadySnake e Xeper ci ributtiamo nella mischia! L’ultima pura heavy metal band inglese sale sul palco e iniziano alla grande con “Hold High The Flame” e “Children of Tomorrow” tratte dal loro capolavoro assoluto “Son Of Odin” 1986. Vedere, anzi, udire la musica degli Elixir è una delizia, sono tecnicamente preparatissimi, i suoni delle chitarre di Norman Gordon e Phil Denton sono pulitissimi e molto melodici, ma sanno essere graffianti e Heavy al momento giusto! La sezione ritmica dei fratelli Nobbs (fondatori della band) è eccezionale (ricordo che nelle fila degli Elixir ha militato pure un certo Clive Burr). Paul Taylor è come sempre un grandissimo cantante, senza toccare note impossibili ma con una timbro vocale bellissimo. “Death Dealer” precede “Sovereign Remedy” e la titletrack del loro ultimo album “Mindcreeper” (consigliato a chi crede che la musica degli eighties non torni più). Il pubblico canta le canzoni insieme a Taylor e tutti i membri della band a turno vengono verso il pubblico per i vari solos ecc…
È davvero un grande spettacolo di Heavy Metal dove la melodia non manca di certo! Ancora da Sovereign Remedy, “Shadows Of The Night” e la bellissima “Knocking On The Gates Of Hell” poi il finale con il loro singolo entrato ormai nel mito “Trearchery”. Il pubblico in estasi e ogni parola viene cantata a gran voce da tutti. Ancora una volta il concerto degli Elixir è stato un grande evento metal!
Una curiosità: sulla scaletta del concerto c’era come ultimo pezzo la bella “Llagaeran” di Soveriegn Remedy ma penso che sia stata giustissima la scelta di cambiare con la loro We Are The Champions “Trearchery”! 
Da notare come gli Elixir ci abbiano regalato una scaletta completamente diversa da quella vista al Pil!
Come di consueto torniamo verso il bar dove stavolta incontriamo i Lyadrive al completo, anzi, più che al completo, infatti c’era anche il figlio (ne sono quasi certo ) di Nick John. Ci sono tutti i membri che hanno partecipato ai vari demo escluso logicamente il compianto Lee Reddings (Rip). Tutta la band è stata gentilissima e ognuno di loro mi ha scritto una dedica autografata sul loro nuovo vinile “Another Time , Another Place”. Davvero simpaticissimi oltre che grandi artisti.
Ci prepariamo per lo show dei Praying Mantis e sono davvero curioso di vedere on stage uno dei più grandi chitarristi di tutti i tempi che però è stato perennemente sottovalutato, Tino Troy. Sicuramente i Mantis (al concerto dei Tygers a Firenze lo scorso 19 Aprile parlando con il mitico Bud Ancillotti della Strana Officina, mi disse che i Prayin Mantis sono una delle sue band preferite di sempre) sono la band meno Heavy della giornata ma ogni loro show è un evento memorabile ed all’Underwold non si cambia certo musica! Anche i più scettici debbono ricredersi ascoltando le note pulitissime e dolcissime che escono fuori dalle dita di Tino Troy sicuramente una delle stelle della giornata. Ricordo che i Mantis hanno avuto vari cantanti tra i quali Paul DiAnno, Gary Barden, Doogie White, Steve Carrol e i due stessi fratelli Troy.
Il nuovo cantante Mike Freeland dimostra di essere un validissimo vocalist e tiene benissimo anche il palco. Sotto la supervisione dei due “brothers” possiamo vedere una formazione di tutto rispetto che annienta centinaia di band molto più blasonate! I presenti si sono sciolti nel vero senso della parola! La parte del leone l’ha fatta senza ombra di dubbio il loro capolavoro del 1980 “Time Tells No Lies” la cui “Lovers To The Grave” ha fatto impazzire tutto il pubblico! I Praying Mantis furono una band di Nwobhm sui generis in quanto il loro punto di forza era la melodia ma non rinunciavano ad assoli magnifici e ad una sezione ritmica veramente tosta. E’ risaputo che io non amo molto l’HR melodico ma i Mantis sono un’eccezione (come anche gli Ufo) e consiglio per chi non li conosce non solo l’acquisto obbligatorio di “Time Tells No Lies” ma anche del loro ultimo lavoro (uscito per la nostrana Frontiers Records) “The Journey Goes On”. L’apoteosi è arrivata con il loro singolo storico “Captured City” che non compariva su “TTNL”. In questa canzone ci sono alcuni degli assoli di chitarra più belli che abbia mai sentito! Ripeto fino alla noia che questo è stato uno dei più bei concerti mai visti e pensare che tra tutte le band della giornata i Mantis erano quelli che amavo di meno! C’è sempre da imparare!!!
Adesso non ci muoviamo perché non vogliamo rischiare di perdere la prima fila proprio in vista degli Headliner della serata, i Witchfynde del grande chitarrista Montalo!
La prima “black metal” (a livello embrionale logicamente) band della storia (prima anche dei Venom, Witchfinder General. Gli unici loro coetanei potrebbero essere i Pagan Altar ma la loro musica era assai meno Heavy di quella di Montalo e soci) è difronte a noi. I loro primi due album “Give Me Hell” e “Stagefright” sono usciti nell’anno di grazia 1980 ed una delle caratteristiche era la voce particolarissima di Steve Bridges, il quale cantava con un timbro vocale mai sentito fino a quel momento, in particolare il suo falsetto che era il tema portante di “Stagerfright” titletrack dell’omonimo album. Ricordo che un certo King Diamond arriverà oltre un anno dopo e sarebbe bellissimo ascoltare una cover di “Stagefright” cantata dal King!
Comunque tornando al concerto vediamo arrivare, oltre al solito incappucciato stile setta satanica, il grande Montalo che pare uscito adesso da Give Me Hell! Perfetto in tutto, ma il cantante sinceramente non mi entusiasma fin dall’inizio.
L’inizio del concerto è affidato alla bellissima “Stagefright” sicuramente il brano più bello dell’album omonimo e uno dei miei preferiti in assoluto. Ma già da qui cominciano i dolori per il nuovo vocalist Harry Harrison (col quale hanno pubblicato The Witching Hour, album con brani ri-registrati e inediti). Sia chiaro che non canta male, anzi, ha pure un’ ottima presenza scenica ma la particolarità dei Witchfynde era proprio la voce incredibile di Steve Brides prima e anche quella di Luther Belts che, anche se non arrivava a toccare le note alte di Bridges, era comunque sensazionale. Purtroppo entrambi questi vocalist sono ormai solo un ricordo. La canzone scorre via benissimo ma nessuno può togliermi dalle orecchie il falsetto di Bridges! Segue un altro pezzo storico di Montalo e soci, l’opener di Give Me Hell “Ready to Roll”, i presenti sono letteralmente scatenati (devo dire che anche le birre cominciavano a fare effetto!) Poi è l’ora di “Holy Ground” ed uno dei loro più grandi capolavori “Leavin Nadir” da brividi. Segue un medley con un trittico pazzesco targato Witchfynde, “Gettin Heavy”, “Telestar” e “Clock & Dagger”. Montalo sempre perfetto sia come chitarrista che nel suo mitico ruolo “Evil”! Il pubblico in visibilio continua a godere con “Moon Magic” (secondo brano tratto da “Stagefright”) e “Love Like Sin”. “Stab In The Back” chiude lo show prima dei bis.
Rientro per il bis che non lascia superstiti “Give Me Hell” e “Wake Up Screaming” e sul finale si torna nuovamente a “Give Me Hell”! Che altro dire, band davvero in gamba anche se ripeto il cantante Harry Harrison non mi ha soddisfatto per niente. Resto dell’idea che sia davvero bravo e si impegna pure molto, ma a mio avviso non può essere lui il vocalist dei Witchfynde! Montalo è un super ed il suo show è superbo ma con Steve Bridges o Luther Beltz gli Witchfynde sarebbero una band di un’altra galassia!!!
Ce ne usciamo felicissimi per un concerto d’altri tempi che solo pochi fortunati sono riusciti a vedere (noi eravamo tra quelli). Difficile dalle nostre parti trovare un locale simile, soprattutto con un acustica simile. L’unica nota negativa che purtroppo non abbiamo potuto aspettare le band per i saluti in quanto siamo stati buttati letteralmente fuori dal locale!
All’esterno siamo solo riusciti a beccare il cantante dei Praying Mantis al quale abbiamo fatto i nostri complimenti e la foto di rito. Attraversiamo la strada e rientriamo nella metropolitana (comodità pazzesca) lasciandoci alle spalle una giornata da sogno. Il pensiero che due giorni dopo nello stesso locale si sarebbero esibiti i Blitzkrieg ci lascia un pò d’amaro in bocca ma si sa qui siamo a Londra (ps due giorni prima c’era il concerto dei Saxon e le Girschool e la sera prima quello dei Cloven Hoof ), la capitale dell’Heavy Metal!

BRITISH STEEL FESTIVAL III - THE UNDERWORLD, CAMDEN TOWN, LONDON /   ENGLISH VERSION, THANKS TO XEPER


We reached the place at five o’clock in the afternoon. The club is right in front of the subway exit! Once inside, we find a typical English pub with a big counter giving drinks, of course lots of beers, and some merchandise stands selling stuff from all the bands that would have played in the next few hours. There was stuff from Witchfynde (not the “Lord of Sin” album which I only own in the LP version), Redline, Lyadrive, of course Elixir (we met the whole Denton family, starting from Phil than his mother, his wife and their two sons, all very kind with us), Praying Mantis and also Bitches Sin. Ian Toomey was actually selling all the Bitches Sin releases of the past and the new cd coming out shortly, called “Uduvudu”; near him John Tucker was selling his book “Suzie smiled...the NWOBHM”! Once reached the second room of The Underworld Club we see Redline already begun their performance.
I immediately tried to reach the stage to see the band and take some photos (this time I decide to give my camera to LadySnake, she is a very good photographer, I trust her and so I can enjoy the concert like every other metalhead in the club!) but someone stopped me: Paul Taylor and all the other guys from Elixir were behind me, they gave me a warm welcome and told me there was a gift for me from the band, actually a LP version of their “The Idol” release, signed by all the members of the band! It was awesome, I thanked them for this surprise, the best I’ve ever had!
We salute each other, than I reach the first row to enjoy Redline performance. They play old school hard rock (I already saw them at the Hard Rock Hell in november 2007), and once “Twistin’ the knife” begun I notice with pleasure the voice of Liam Doherty is in great condition (always dressed up with an Harley Davidson/Ignition t-shirt), also guitarist A.D. and the other two memebers of the band (both ex-Bitches Sin) Sin Marck Biddescombe (drums) and Martin Orum (bass). “Cold Silence”, “No Limits”, “Heaven’s Gate” and “Straight between the Eyes” (this song reminds me a superb Hard Rock release of the past. The rhythmic section is perfect and, strangely, this place seems to have a good acustic (that’s not easy to find in this type of pubs/clubs). Unfortunately, due to lack of time, Redline have been forced tu cut out their last song, the hymn “King of the Mountain”, beautiful song that I love. Although a bit disappointed for this, I really enjoyed the rest of their show: great band!
Before Lyadrive performance I go back to the merchandise stands to buy some of the stuff, like the LP version of “Another Time, Another Place” and the new release from Lyadrive and, of course, the festival t-shirt, than we come back under the stage to wait for the band to come. Lyadrive have recently re-united after twenty years from thei split-up and released a new album called “Post Millennium Blues” and some old songs collected togheter in a limited LP called “The Sands of Time: sessions 1980-82”. When I see those bands reuniting after many years some doubts always rise up to my mind thinking about how the performance would be, but when their performance starts, all those worries disappear! We are in front of a super-band! They start with “Whitedress” followed by their cult song “Another time, another place”. Nick John has lot of energy on the stage, he shakes the microphone like David Coverdale usually does (although he has a bit more space to do that!!). At the end of the song he thanks the audience for being here and introduces the next song this way: “Now we are going to execute a song from an American band that can be considered ad honorem as a band memeber of the NWOBHM movement”! The band is called Riot, and the song is “Warrior”, the audience is enthusiastic! After “Black Waters”, is time for another cover song, this time of an English band called Trespass: this song is considered one of the best of the whole NWOBHM movement, and is called “One of these Days”. Lyadrive already covered that song and put it in their “Another time, another place” release (produced by Vinyl Tap in 1997, including all songs that have never been published). Immediately after the band starts with their two final songs. The first one is “Lazerwind” (taken from their 1998 release “Legends of Progressive”), great songs that shows how the band is skilled and can play both HR and HM songs, and even some progressive ones. Their music skills (like many other English bands) cannot be brought into question, their solos are well played and they rimain as pressed in your mind! The last track is “Steel away the night”. As I said in other place or discussion, this song reminds me “Fear of the Dark” from Iron Maiden (although it has been written ten years before) not for the music but in the song structure, and tempo changings (fast beginning and guitar accelerations). Even the intro and John’s voice that starts slowly and than rises up to reach high levels (like “Fear...” actually does)! You have to listen to it, than you’ll make me know what you think about. The performance is over, but the audience is still enthusiastic for what they have been listening to (it couldn’t have been different, the performance has been superb), even people who didn’t know anything about the band. At this point, I start thinking Lyadrive did the performance of the festival! I give you the complete line-up: Nick John voice, Gary Wilson bass guitar, Keith Thompson guitar, Graham Suart guitar, Steve Jones guitar, Lee Burrows drums, Paul Ryan guitar, Steve Christiansen bass guitar.
I also notice there are quite a little number of girls, and they look really great! The club is not overcrowded (200-300 people) but this is the most underground festival in the world, so we can’t expect much more! Anyway, there are Japanese, Spanish and 4 Italians! We than go back to the bar, buy the new Bitches Sin album (called “Uduvudu”) start talking with Ian Toomey than take a signature and a photo with him (for those who don’t know he made some of the most brilliant solos in the history of metal togheter with his brother/bandmate in Bitches Sin). Also Redline are here, we have been in touch for some months after the HRH edition, they really liked our “Ignition” review and put it translated in their website. They say they wish to come to Italy for some shows, let’s see if it will be possible. In the picture I took with them you can see the most NWOBHM beer in the world, actually it is from Newcastle (city of many bands like Fist, Venom, Tygers of Pan Tang, Raven and Mythra, they were part of what some critics called the NWOBHMNED, that states for New Wave of British Heavy Metal North East Division).
Elixir are going to begin their show, so we all put togheter in the first raw! The last genuine heavy metal band from England reaches the stage and strats performing “Hold Hight the Flame” and “Children of the Flame” both from their 1986 release called “Son of Odin”. Listening to the Elixir music is always beautiful because they are technically skilled and their guitar sound (both Norman Gordon and Phil Denton) is loud, clear and melodic (but still fuckin’heavy!). Rythmic section from Dobbs brothers (founding memebers of the band) is also excellent (at the beginning in the line-up there was a drummer calle Clive Burr). Paul Taylor, like ever, is always a great singer and frontman. He doesn’t reach high-pitches but his voice mark is undoubtely unique! “Death dealer” anticipates “Sovereign Remedy” and their latest album title.track “Mindcreeper” (I suggest that album for those who believe 80’s music is coming back no more). The audience is really involved, singing the songs togheter with the band, and they often come near us to play solos and other stuff. This is really a great concert, some other some other songs from “Sovereign remedy”, this time “Shadows of the Night” and “Knocking on the Gates of Hell”, and immediately after their single, “Trearchery”. Once again, Elixir’s performance has been absolutely awesome! One trick: in the set list the last song was “Llagaeran” but at the end they chose to end the performance with their “We are the champions” song, “Trearchery”. You also have to notice the set list has been very different from the Play it Loud II one...
Elixir’s performance over, we go back to the bar, this time we meet all the Lyadrive guys, including Nick John’s son (I’m pretty sure of that), and all the past memebers that played in the band in various demos (excluding of course Lee Reddings, R.I.P.). All the guys have been very kind with me, I want to thank again all of them, they also signed the LP version of their “Another Time, Another Place”. In two words: great musicians!
We prepare ourself for the Praying Mantis show that is going to begin in few moments. I am really curious to see onstage one of the best guitar player in the world, always understimated by all, Tino Troy. Of course Mantis (I discoverd this band is one the favourite of Bud Ancillotti, singer in both Bud Tribe and Strana Officina) are the less heavy metal band of the festival, but every show of the band must be considered as unique. All the doubtful people must change idea when listening to the clear and sweet notes that come from Tino’s guitar, one of the star of the festival. I remember Mantis had several singer in their previous line-ups, like Paul DiAnno, Gary Barden, Doogie White, Steve Carrol and Troy brothers too!!! New singer, called Mike Freeland is both a good singer and frontman. All the members are well supervised by Troy’s brothers, with this line-up Praying Mantis are sure better than hundreds of other bands more celebrated. “Time tells no lies” has been well celebrated for this occasion, “Lovers to the Grave” made the audience totally crazy! We can say from the beginning Mantis were a NWOBHM band a bit sui generis, in the sense that their main feature was the melody, but they did not renounce to make awesome guitar solos and heavy rythmic section! You know that I do not appreciate melodic hard rock/aor but Mantis are one of the exception togheter with UFO (I suggest you to buy their latest album, called “The Journey goes on” released by Italian based record label Frontiers records). The highset moment of the Mantis performance has been “Captured City” (of course, from TTNL), this song contains some of the best guitar solos ever made by men! I really love them! Life is strange, you know, Mantis were the band I was waiting less than the others, but their performance has been probabily the best, I loved this concert!
We keep the first raw, as Montalo and Witchfynde are coming in few moments, they are the true headliners of the British Steel Festival III! They were the first “black metal band” (they came before Venom and Witchfinder General). The only band that can challenge for this nominee are Pagan Altar, but their music was less heavy than the one of Montalo. “Give’em Hell” and “Stagefright” were both released in 1980, and one of the main features of the band was the voice of Steven Bridges, never heard something like that before. He was the first who sang in falsetto, even before King Diamond who came more than one year after (it would be great to ear a cover of “Stagefright” made by King Diamond!). The performance starts with a hooded figure coming across the stage followed by Montalo who seems to be still in the 80’s for the way he is dressed. He is perfect in all senses, not the same thing I can say for the singer, I realli did not like him for the very beginning. The first song is “Stagefright”, best song of the first album and one of my poreferred one. Soon new singer Harry Harrison starts having problems due to the different vocal style. I mean, he doesn’t sing bad, he is not a bad singer, and is a good frontman, but the peculiarity of Witchfynde music was the voice of Steven Bridges and after Luther Beltz (he was too another great singer, just one step under Bridges). The second song performed is “Ready to Roll” from the second album, the audience is really excited, than “Holy Ground” and “Leaving Nadir”. Immediately after a medley composed by “Gettin’heavy”, “Telestar” and “Cloak and Dagger”. “Moon Magic” comes right after the medley, and “Love like Sin”. “Stab in the Back” is the last song before the encore, made of “Give’em Hell” and “Wake up screaming”, and than once again “Give’em hell”! What elese I can say, great performance but I still do not appreciate the singer, his voice is to different from those of Bridges and Beltz. He is good, sings very well, but is not fitted for this band! Montalo instead, is superb, with one of the past singers on the microphone this band would be one hundred thousand better than they are at the moment.
We leave (or better, we are forced to leave) The Underworld (the nigh is still young and young fashioned guys must have fun with their ugly and weak music) happy for the great performances, but disappointed because we did not have the possibility to meet the headliners and take some photos with them. We just met the Mantis singer, we took a picture, made our best wishes for the future and say him good bye. We cross the road and take the tube leaving behind us a beautiful day. The bitter thing is that three days after Blitzkrieg would have played here, but unfortunately we had to leave for Italy before that date. But you know, this is London, here you have great concerts every single day (the day before we arrived there were Saxon and Girlschool for example), the capital city of Heavy Metal music!
