RECENSIONE:              REDLINE       "IGNITION"     Anctartic Records     2007




Da poco nota la line up del già mitico British Steel Festival, Witchfynde, Praying Mantis, Elixir, Redline, Laydrive. Qui di seguito ci occupiamo dei Redline , recensendo il loro nuovo album “Ignition”. Ho visto questa band dal vivo lo scorso 10 Novembre in Inghilterra a Minehead durante il bellissimo festival Hard Rock Hell. Non sapevo chi fossero ma mi trovai davanti a una band di “attempati” rocker che suonavano un Hard Rock roccioso in stile ‘70/’80. Ne rimasi subito colpito, il pubblico non superava le 40/50 unità ma questi ragazzi picchiavano duro. Durante una delle ultime canzoni Liam Doherty (voce)  scese dal palco e consegnò ai presenti una card pubblicitaria e lì vidi che si trattava dei Redline, nome a me sconosciuto ma ripeto mi fecero un gran bell’effetto!
Ma chi sono i Redline?
Redline è un nome che ai molti dirà poco ma i loro componenti anche se non certo famosi hanno vissuto in pieno  l’era della Nwobhm. Il batterista Mark Biddiscombe faceva parte della storica band inglese Chainsaw che nel 1981 pubblicò il mitico 7” "Police And Politicians" dalla bellissima copertina, ancora oggi un pezzo prelibato per i collezionisti di Nwobhm. Il bassista Martin Orum suonava nella band gallese degli Whatered Man poi entrambi entrarono nella storica band dei Bitches Sin (band principalmente Hard Rock influenzatissima dai Deep Purple) con i quali registrarono il bellissimo album Predator nel 1982. Si sono aggiunti per la nascita della band nel 2006 Paul Bridgewater voce e Adrians Yeomans chitarra poi sostituito da Liam Doherty per le registrazioni del nuovo “Ignition”.
L’album si apre con “King of Mountain” un HR come dicevo roccioso con gran riff iniziale  voce bella e non manca di accenti melodici, durante l’assolo si capisce subito di che pasta è fatto Yeomans.
“No Limits” riparte in quarta con una sezione rimica che farebbe invidia a molte più blasonate, la voce calda leggermente roca e blueseggiante di Liam fa brillare questo pezzo sempre sorretto da un riffing robustissimo, anche qui  fast ma non troppo.
“Twistin’ The Knife”, si apre nuovamente col solito gran riff ( Yeomans deve aver ascoltato Iommi per una vita) ritmo un po’ più lento con un sound che va più incontro all’HR americano degli eighties rispetto alle due tracce precedenti.
“Gold Silence” arpeggio per quella che si preannuncia un ballad con i fiocchi con un assolo che ricorda i big dei seventies maestri della sei corde. Il secondo assolo più veloce è bellissimo, da brividi (assoli così li faceva Michael Schenker dei bei tempi).
“High Price To Pay”, ritorno a sonorità Hard Rock che potrebbe far parte di un disco dei Rainbow primi anni ’80.
“Some Kinda’ Mean”, inizia col solito riff e con la voce di Doherty più cattiva per poi tornare su note dolci durante il ritornello ma sia chiaro ma melodie melense o simil Aor. Qui l’Hr regna sovrano.
“Straight Between The Eyes” , titolo che ricorda lo storico album dei Rainbow del 1982, sarà una coincidenza?
“Coast to Coast” è forse la canzone più easy dell’intero album. Carina.
“Heaven’s Gate”, inizia con la voce di Doherty molto vicina a J.L.Turner, anche qui comunque nonostante il solito riffing le note dolci vanno per la maggiore e troviamo anche un ritmo assai cadenzato.
“Ride”, pezzo conclusivo dell’album con ritorno al sound Hard degli inizi. Sarò monotono ma dei solos così belli non si trovano spesso di questi tempi dove la distorsione va per la maggiore.
Concludendo consiglierei senz’altro l’acquisto di questo CD, certo niente di trascendentale ma sicuramente un gran bel pezzo di Hard Rock con più di una sfumatura Heavy che va ad arricchire ancora di più un già felice 2007.

Redline – Ignition

The line up of the awesome British Steel Festival, Witchfynde, Praying Mantis, Elixir, Redline, Laydrive has been known for a short time. Here we are talking about Redline, reviewing their new album “Ignition”. I saw this band live last 10th of November in England at Minehead during the wonderful Hard Rock Hell Festival. I didn’t know who they were, but I saw a band of “old rockers” who were playing a powerful 70’s and 80’s style Hard Rock. I was immediately struck, the audience was less than 40/50 people, but these guys kicked out a loud sound. During one of the last songs, Liam Doherty (voice) get down the stage and gave people an ad card and then I knew they were Redline, an unknown name to me but, I repeat, I remained amazed!
But who is Redline?
Redline is a band that most people don’t know, but its members, even if they are not very famous, lived in the heart of the age of NWOBHM. Drummer Mark Biddiscombe belonged to the historical English band Chainsaw that in 1981 recorded the great 7” titled “Police And Politicians”. It had a beautiful cover and it is still today a big shot for NWOBHM collectors. Bassist Martin Orum played in the Welsh band Whatered Man, than both of them entered the historical band Bitches Sin (a Hard Rock band mostly influenced by Deep Purple) with which they recorded the great “Predator” album in 1982. In 2006, Adrians Yeomans (guitar) and Paul Bridgewater (voice) joined the band that was officially founded. Than the singer Liam Doherty replaced Bridgewater for the recording sessions of the new “Ignition” album.
The album opens with “King Of Mountain”, a powerful Hard Rock track with a great initial riff, a beautiful voice with some melodic cues every so often. During the solo it’s clear what a great guitarist Yeomans is!
“No Limits” starts with a rhythmic session that would be the envy of the best known ones, Liam’s warm, bluesy and slightly hoarse voice embellishes this track continuously supported by a very strong riffing, here fast but not so much.
“Twistin’ The Knife” starts again with the usual great riff (Yeomans should have listened to Iommi for a long time), the rhythm is a bit slower with a sound that’s closer to the 80’s American Hard Rock if compared to the two previous tracks.
“Gold Silence”, arpeggio for what it seems to be a first-rate ballad with a solo reminding of the 70’s big six-string masters. The second faster solo is very beautiful, terrific (only Michael Schenker in his best times played such solos).
“High Price To Pay”, a come-back to the Hard Rock sonorities which could belong to a Rainbow album of the early 80’s.
“Some Kinda’ Mean” starts with the usual riff and the voice of Doherty is here “nastier” to become soft during the refrain, but – be it clear - no dull or AOR like melodies. Here Hard Rock rules!
“Straight Between The Eyes”, a title that reminds us of the historical Rainbow album of 1982. Is it a coincidence?
“Coast To Coast” is maybe the easiest track of the whole album. Nice song.
“Heaven’s Gate” starts with Doherty’s voice very near to J.L. Turner’s one. However, despite the usual riffing, the sweet notes have the lion’s share and we can even find a very marked rhythm.
“Ride”, the last track of the album with a come-back to the Hard sound of the beginnings. I may be boring, but we can’t often find so beautiful solos in these times where distortions are very popular.
Finally, I would suggest the purchase of this CD without any doubt. Of course it isn’t the best Heavy Metal album ever produced, but it’s surely a great Hard Rock piece with more than one Heavy tone which further enriches a still great 2007!

P.S.: At British Steel Festival they will be great as they were at Hard Rock Hell Festival. Guaranteed!
