Recensione :        JAGUAR          “RUN RAGGED”         ANGEL AIR


Mi accingo a recensire una band che come poche altre ha fatto veramente la storia del metal. Purtroppo non ricompensata dal music business. Forse qualche errore è stato commesso proprio dai Jaguar stessi, vedi il cambio di sound tra “Power Games” e “This Time”, ma molto della colpa è dovuto ai mass media che hanno letteralmente ignorato il movimento della NWOBHM. "This Time" non è certo uno dei miei album preferiti (invece considero” Power Games” una vera opera d’arte dell’Heavy Metal), ma sicuramente dava le paghe alle decine anzi centinaia di gruppi AOR che a quei tempi spopolavano in America e a livelli leggermente inferiori anche nel resto del mondo. Comunque torniamo a Run Ragged. Dopo il discusso “Wake Me” dove si avvertiva un sound un pò troppo modernista, qui si ritorna alle origini dello Speed Metal, in altre parole ai Jaguar stessi ( dobbiamo dire che insieme ai Jaguar anche i Raven furono i precursori dello Speed e ispiratori di future grandi band prima fra tutte i Metallica). L’opener” Run Ragged” è travolgente e non a caso questa canzone ha aperto il concerto dei Jaguar al British Steel Festival ( vedi report). “Feng Shui” prosegue il martellamento dell’opener con un Jamie Manton strepitoso, qui vanno spese due parole per questo vocalist, una voce potentissima e bellissima, a mio parere il paragone con Bruce Dickinson non sfigura affatto, ma sia chiaro non un clone ma una voce personalissima e una estensione vocale che pochissimi altri hanno. Infatti a me ricorda anche il Geof Tate dei primi Queensryche. Per finire un timbro vocale bellissimo e come se non bastasse, on stage rende alla perfezione anche dal punto di vista scenico (è veramente scatenato ). Tornando alla song ( Feng Shui) ritmo incessante da Speed Metal ma con un Gary Pepperd che non perde mai di vista il sound e la classe unica che hanno sempre avuto i Jaguar. Terza song,” As The Crow Files” dove velocità e chitarra (che ricorda vagamente i Maiden), contribuiscono a farne una grande HM track. Come una furia attacca “No Change Given”, con un riffing che ricorda quel capolavoro del 1981 chiamato “Back Street Woman”! Jmaie Manton sempre sopra le righe e in vena di screaminig, una sezione ritmica che con Nathan Cox e Darren Purze non perde un colpo. “ Living Hell “parte con un intro di batteria che si trasforma velocemente in una locomotiva. Qui c’è un pò di spazio anche per la melodia ma Gary Pepperd non concede respiro per l’intera durata della canzone , dove possiamo trovare anche un assolo di basso. Sesta traccia è” Gulf War Syndrhome” inclusa anche nella scaletta del British Steel 2. Jamie Manton parte ancora una volta in quarta seguito dal solito  Gary Pepperd. Riff e accellerazioni amate anche dai Metallica sono la struttura di questa canzone. “Nailed” inizia con un intro di basso e chitarra seguite da un Manton che ricorda davvero il grande Dickinson. Siamo veramente tornati negli anni Ottanta! Ottava song “Sff2Y” e ancora una volta in evidenza i due fuoriclasse Gary Pepperd e Jamie Manton. Grande assolo di Pepperd. “This Is Your Life” forse la più Hard Rock song del disco. Ma che dico? E’ ancora Heavy Metal al 100%!
“Eighties” , il titolo è già un programma, per uno come me che ama da morire gli Eighties! Chiusura con “My Weakness”, qui c'è un attacco un po più modernista ma che si trasforma presto nel "Jaguar sound" che ho ammirato tutto questo Run Ragged. Per concludere devo dire che i Giaguari sono tornati alla grande , come se da Power Games ad oggi fosse veramente passato soltanto il tempo necessario per realizzare un altro album, e non 24 anni!

JAGUAR - RUN RAGGED

I’m going to review one of the band who really made the history of Metal, although not well rewarded by music business. Maybe some mistakes have been made by the band, let’s think about how changed the sound between “Power Games” and “This Time”, but the main fault undoubtedly remains of the music business by ignoring the NWOBHM movement in those years. I cannot say “This Time” is one of my favourite album ever, instead of “Power Games” which I consider a true Masterpiece of Heavy Metal, but it was better than the big part of other AOR bands and releases coming from America and worldwide. Let’s talk about “Run Ragged”. After the discussed “Wake Me” dominated by a more modern sound, this new release by Jaguar really goes back to the roots of Speed Metal where the band played an important role together with Raven (also from the U.K.) inspiring future bands, Metallica first! The opener “Run Ragged” is an overwhelming song (this song also opened Jaguar performance at the last edition of “British Steel Festival 2”). “Feng Shui” continues the hammering of the first song with a great performance by Jamie Manton, singer with a powerful voice and vocal extension similar to those of Bruce Dickinson and Geoff Tate of Queensrÿche (early releases), extraordinary also on stage, but also a perfect job by Gary Pepperd on the guitars. The third song is “As the Crow flies” where both speed and guitar contribute to create a pure Heavy Metal song with some Maiden influences. Like a fury comes “No Change given” with a riffing remembering an old masterpiece named “Back Street Woman” (1981), great screaming by Jamie and perfect rhythmic section by Nathan Cox and Darren Purze. “Living Hell” starts with drums growing faster and faster, leaving a bit of space to the guitar melody by Gary Pepperd and a bass solo. Sixth song is “Gulf War Syndrome” also included in the BSF2 setlist. Riffs and accelerations (appreciated than by Metallica) form its structure! “Nailed” starts with bass and guitar followed than by the voice (in this song very similar to Dickinson) of Manton: seems to be once again back in the 80’s! Next songs are “Sft2y”, and still in evidence the two champions Gary Pepperd and Jamie Manton. Great Pepperd's solo.“This is your Life” (which seems to be a bit more hard rock oriented, but in the end is another heavy metal song 100%!!!), “Eighties”  ( I love that title) and “My Weakness” the last song of the album, starting with a bit more modern sound but going back to the “Jaguar stile” as the other songs of “Run Ragged”. Concluding my review I have to say Jaguar are back like if “Power Games” was released last year instead of 24 fucking years ago. “Run Ragged” is the best NWOBHM from the end of the eighties till now! And I hope to see Jaguar on stage again as soon as possible!!!
