Recensione:               Handsome Beasts     -      Rock And A Hard Place      2007


Gli Handsome Beasts furono una grande band di Heavy Blues Rock autori di un grandissim album nel 1981 dal titolo “Bestiality” con una copertina fuori dal commune (non furono risparmiate critiche) con il leader storico Garry Dalloway di notevole stazza fisica ( il cui soprannome è “The Original Fat Bastard”) inchinato che abbracciava un maiale e la retrocover presentava altre foto con Dalloway in varie posizioni sempre col maiale. Putroppo la cover fece più scalpore del disco e questo oscurò assai la bellezza di quell’album, potevamo sentire nei solchi di quel vinile quel famoso blues-rock che tanto piaceva a David Coverdale e ai suoi Whitesnake (del periodo Come an Get It) e anche la voce di Dalloway in più di un’occasione ricordava il grande David.
Adesso è uscito un nuovo lavoro degli Handsome Beasts dal titolo “Rock And A Hard Place” la line up è completamente rivoluzionata e tanto ci sarebbe da dire in proposito, io mi limiterò a parlare del disco e una cosa da sapere è che questo disco è stato scritto da Garry Dalloway (insieme a Nyland e Boreland) poco prima della sua morte avvenuta nel 2005 causata da un infarto. Per la precisione Dalloway è morto una settimana dopo aver inciso le parti vocali di “Rock And A Hard Place”. Questo vuol dire che siamo difronte ad un vero disco degli Handsome Beasts senza se o ma!
Dalle prime note di “Rock And A Hard Place” si può sentire come il sound della band si sia indurito rispetto al loro primo album, fast riff di Nyland e Boreland per un opener al fulmicotone. Qui non c’è blue-rock che tenga siamo difronte a vero Heavy Metal.
“Animal” si apre ancora con un bel riff e Garry Dalloway dimostra (come se ce ne fosse bisogno) di cavarsela bene anche dove la parte cantata è più melodica. “Blood On Their Hands” inizia con un giro di chitarra che potrebbe far pensare ad una song aor ma niente di più sbagliato appena qualche istante e parte un riff sabbathiano incredibile e il ritmo cadenzato della canzone (comprese le parte vocali) ci riporta ai maestri Sabbath dei seventies.
“Drama Queen” fila liscia su un hard rock di classe e un refrain che ti prende. Ancora grandi assoli di chitarra con un basso che sorregge tutta la canzone. “One Thing More” ha un inizio purpleiano e Dalloway ci riporta a quel sound blues rock dei vecchi tempi. Il solo di chitarra  veramente bello ricorda un pò anche Brian May. “Never Before” ha un inizio bellissimo prima col basso poi con la chitarra ritmica che fa un gran riff e la lead guitar che tira fuori un solo grandissimo, favolosa. Quando penso che si tratti di un bellissimo brano strumentale ecco che torna un riff nuovamente sabbathiano e Dalloway comincia a cantare una canzone che risulterà alla fine essere la più heavy del disco. Una nota particolare va riservata a due chitarristi come Alan Nyland e Mark Boreland sono veramente eccezionali. Con i suoi 6 minutie 10 secondi si conferma una delle top song dell’intero album.
Inizio roccioso per “Heartbreaker” altra song dove si va poco per il sottile, non tecnicismi buttati li per sfoggiare una buona tecnica ma assoli veramente belli da ascoltare quelli che piacciono tanto a me. Che canzone!
“Headstrong”inizia nuovamente all’insegna dell’Heavy Metal . “Love’s A Game” sembra una ballad con i fiocchi intro con chitarra acustica e bellissimo assolo di chitarra elettrica da far venire i brividi così come la bellissima voce di Garry . Non si può definirla una vera ballad ma semplicemente una gran bella canzone con un ritmo meno indiavolato di altre. Si torna sul duro con “Piper” e finale con “Believe” intro di basso e  altro gran riff con ritornello accattivante . Forse questo è  il pezzo che concede qualcosa in più al mercato americano ma non più di tanto.
Da notare che ai cori hanno partecipato Pete Way (Ufo-Waysted-Fastway), Spike (Quireboys) e John Ward (O.D. Saxon).
Giù di cappello agli Handsome Beasts che hanno sfornato un capolavoro di disco. Sì questa volta sono davvero entusiasta! Garry Dalloway (RIP) 1953 – 2005 come molti altri grandi artisti continuerà a vivere in eterno grazie alla sua musica. Però vorrei chiudere questa recensione dando la giusta considerazione anche ai ragazzi che lo hanno accompagnato in questo disco capolavoro, Alan Nyland e Mark Boreland chitarre, Sean Brennan basso e Mick Roobottom batteria.

Handsome Beasts were a great Heavy Blues Rock band that, in 1981, composed an awesome album titled “Bestiality” with a not ordinary cover at all (criticisms weren’t spared) with its historical big fat leader Garry Dalloway (his nickname is “The Original Fat Bastard”) bent down embracing a pig and the back cover showed other pictures of Dalloway in different positions with the pig again. Unfortunately, the cover caused a bigger sensation than the album and that obscured the album’s beauty a lot. Infact in the grooves of that vinyl we could listen to that famous blues-rock beloved by David Coverdale and his Whitesnake (belonging to the period of “Come An’ Get It”) and also Dalloway’s voice reminded us of the great David more than ones.
Now a new album by Handsome Beasts, called “Rock And A Hard Place”, has just been released. The line up has totally changed and a lot of things should be said about this, but I’m just going to talk about the record, even if we have to know that this CD was written by Garry Dalloway (together with Nyland and Boreland) shortly before his death in 2005 caused by a heart attack. To be precise, Dalloway died a week after he recorded the vocal parts of “Rock And A Hard Place”. That means that this is a true Handsome Beasts album without any doubt!
Since the first notes of “Rock And A Hard Place” you can hear how the sound of the band is harder compared with their first LP, fast riff by Nyland and Boreland for a powerful opener!
Here there is no Blues-rock, this is true Heavy Metal.
“Animal” opens with a beautiful riff again and Garry Dalloway shows (…) to be good even where the vocal part is more melodic. “Blood On Their Hands” starts with a guitar part which could sound like an AOR song but nothing could be so wrong. A few notes and an amazing Black Sabbath-style riff starts and the marked rhythm of the song (including the vocal parts) reminds us of the Sabbath of the 70’s.
“Drama Queen” goes along a classy Hard Rock and a catchy refrain. It’s time for great guitar solos with a bass which sustains the whole song. “One Thing More” has got a Deep Purple style opening and Dalloway takes us back to the Blues Rock sound of the past times. The very beautiful guitar solo reminds us a bit of Brian May, too. “Never Before” wonderfully opens with the bass firstly, then with the rhythm guitar which plays a great riff and the lead guitar kicks out an awesome solo, terrific. When I think it’s a very beautiful instrumental track, another Sabbath style riff comes back and Dalloway starts to sing a song which results to be the heaviest one of the full-length. We have to specially mention the two guitarists Alan Nyland and Mark Boreland, they’re excellent. With its 6 minutes and 10 seconds it is one of the best songs of the whole album.
Strong opening for “Heartbreaker”, another song which doesn’t mince matters. No excessive technical details just to show their own skill, but wonderful solos to listen to, my favourite ones. What a song!
“Headstrong” starts in the Heavy Metal style again. “Love’s A Game” seems a first-rate ballad. An acoustic guitar intro and an amazing electric guitar solo that impresses the listener as the wonderful Garry’s voice. It can’t be considered as a real ballad, but simply as a great song with a less wild rhythm than the other ones. Hard rock sound again with “Piper” and the ending track “Believe”: bass intro and another great riff with a catchy refrain. Maybe this is the song mostly devoted to the American market but not totally. Note that Pete Way (Ufo-Waysted-Fastway), Spike (Quireboys) and John Ward (O.D. Saxon) took part in the chorus sections.
Hats off to Handsome Beasts who released a masterpiece album! Yes, this time I’m really enthusiastic! Garry Dalloway (R.I.P.) 1953-2005, as many other great artists, will go on living forever thanks to his music. But I would like to close this review with a deserved mention also to the boys who cooperated with him in this masterpiece, Alan Nyland and Mark Boreland (guitars), Sean Brennan (bass) and Mick Roobottom (drums).
