Torna a farsi sentire la storica ascia dei Pirati tedeschi, e lo fa con un’intervista su uno spaccato di vita personale, tra gioie e momenti bui e non manca anche di fare qualche piccola stilettata. La parola a Majk Moti.

Ciao Majk, innanzitutto lasciami dire che è un onore conversare con te e con una porzione di storia importante dell’heavy metal tedesco ed europeo, almeno per chi ha avuto sempre come punto di riferimento il power metal degli anni 80. Per chi non lo sapesse, ma credo pochi, sei stato per lungo tempo un membro dei Running Wild, attraversando il momento d’oro che la band ha vissuto negli Eights e sei stato partecipe degli album fondamentali della band di Rock’n’Rolf, da Branded and Exiled fino a Death or Glory. Per incominciare, ci vuoi dire come sei entrato a far parte della band di Rolf Kasparek e cosa facevi prima di essere un membro dei Running Wild?


Ho iniziato con i Running Wild nell’ Agosto del 1985. In precedenza sono stato in diverse bande locali nella mia città natale come chitarrista e cantante. I nomi erano Gate, Random, Metallian per esempio. Non meritano davvero di essere menzionate, ma sono state importanti per il mio sviluppo

Rock’n’Rolf è sempre stato il compositore principale della band ma anche tu hai dato il tuo contributo a comporre alcune song. Sono sempre corse voci che asserivano che Rolf non amasse far partecipare gli altri componenti della band alla stesura dei pezzi, dipingendolo come un factotum che molto spesso usava atteggiamenti dispotici nei confronti di chi faceva parte della sua band. Tu che hai convissuto con lui mi confermi questa teoria che in molti si sono fatti negli anni?



Sì, questo non è un mistero. A Rolf non andava a genio che che altri scrivessero canzoni per i Running Wild, per questo Preacher ( l’altra ascia storica della prima formazione ufficiale dei Running Wild N.d.a) lasciò la band. Io sono riuscito a sfuggire al suo controllo scrivendo alcune canzoni. La paura di Rolf era che forse il tipico suono Running Wild si sarebbe snaturato se altri avessero avuto troppa influenza, e forse aveva ragione, chi lo sa? D'altra parte, se si esagera, si può finire proprio lì dove Running Wild sono ora!

Facciamo un piccolo ripasso della storia dei Running Wild che ti ha visto protagonista; 1985 esce Branded And Exiled e vede il tuo esordio di chitarrista al posto di Gerald “Preacher” Warnecke. Allora foste la band che insieme ai Grave Digger aveva dato un taglio nuovo al metal germanico, dopo Accept e Scorpions. Siete stati una delle prime band in Germania ad adottare dei testi oscuri e tematiche estreme che portarono alcuni addetti ai lavori a considerarvi una band satanica. Il motivo forse è riportato anche dal fatto che la copertina di Branded..riportava il famoso pentacolo satanico. Io personalmente da fan non ho mai condiviso in pieno questo appellativo “satanico” che vi affibbiarono ai tempi, posso solo fare un eccezione per la musica la quale era effettivamente ossianica e violenta ma ciò non è sufficiente, tu cosa pensi al riguardo di questa cosa?



Credo che il motivo di questo falso nomignolo satanico derivasse originariamente da Preacher, ma non è mai stata una cosa grave. Non è un mistero che Preacher studiasse teologia a quel tempo e oggi è un vero predicatore! (A proposito: adesso ha una nuova band!) Li conosco tutti di persona (Stefan Boriss, Hasche, Rock'n'Rolf, Preacher), e credimi, nessuno di loro ha mai avuto intenzioni sataniche. Io sono un agnostico, un esoterico nella migliore delle ipotesi, il che implica anche che non credo in Satana o concetti simili. E 'stata più o meno solo una moda in quel momento, o una sorta di società-contraddizione.

1987 : è l’anno della consacrazione del nome dei Running Wild con “Under Jolly Roger”, il disco più riconosciuto e a cui si fa riferimento quando si parla della band; il disco vi apre le porte del successo in Germania, anche se in realtà vi eravate già fatti un nome, e vi permette anche di farvi notare all’estero; avviene la svolta sui testi che abbandonarono le tematiche esoteriche e iniziano a parlare di pirati, un’ argomento che poi Rolf ha portato avanti per oltre un decennio. Che ricordi hai di quei tempi? Che aria si respirava all’interno della band?



Beh, la sensazione maggiore è stata che eravamo stanchi di tutto questo accostamento a tematiche sataniche, e indossare abiti attinenti. Abbiamo pensato che dovevamo essere diversi da tutte le principali bands di metal oscuro se volevamo essere notati.. Rolf così ha avuto l'idea del Metal Pirate, e noi tutti lo abbiamo appoggiato in questo, proprio perché era diverso e perché non significava in realtà essere così oscuri. E 'stato un grande momento il dare il via allo sviluppo di tutti i capi di abbigliamento e dell'idea di base per il nuovo tipo di testi. Abbiamo visto film pirata, ci siamo dati alla lettura di un sacco di libri sul tema dei pirati e così via. Dopo tutto ci siamo divertiti un sacco a fare tutto ciò.. Siamo stati veramente entusiasti.


5)
A seguito di questo fortunato “colpo di cannone” arriva il primo live album “Ready For Boarding”. Come ricorderai, ci siamo trovati a parlare proprio di questo disco recentemente in uno scambio di e-mail, e come ti dissi c’è una leggenda qui dalle mie parti che vuole che quel live sia stato registrato in USA durante un fantomatico tour di supporto ai Motley Crue. Vuoi dire pubblicamente quello che hai detto a me privatamente per mettere a tacere definitivamente queste voci?



Sì, posso dire che questo album sicuramente non è stato registrato in tour con i Motley Crue.






6)Nel live è inoltre possibile trovare un’inedito “Purgatory” che avete dedicato ironicamente al P.M.R.C, l’organizzazione repressiva vigente allora in USA che metteva alla gogna tutto ciò che fosse rock e metal. Come mai non c’è stata l’idea di proporre quel pezzo su di un disco vero e proprio?


Non ne ho idea.

1988: esce “Port Royal” ed è un altro asso nella manica per i Running Wild. Tu contribuisci alla composizione trall’altro della stupenda Calico Jack, dedicata al capitano John Rackham, ovvero sia l’inventore del Jolly Roger, la fiera bandiera con il teschio con le tibie, il simbolo stesso della pirateria. Avvengono i primi importanti cambi di lineup ma la band ne esce rinforzata grazie all’innesto di una sezione ritmica spaventosa, con Ian Finley alla batteria e Jens Becker al basso. Anche li ci vuoi raccontare che aria tirava all’interno della band con questa nuova ritrovata lineup?



Beh, qui c’è un errore! I "sostituti" sono stati Stefan Schwarzmann (batteria) e Jens Becker (basso). Dopo le registrazioni di Port Royal, quando stavamo finendo il miraggio, Stefan ha avuto un'offerta da UDO ed ha accettato. Così ha lasciato la band e abbiamo trovato Iain Finlay. Il lavoro di batteria su Port Royal, tuttavia, è stato svolto da Stefan Schwarzmann.
Abbiamo provato un sacco di persone alle audizioni prima che venissero Stefan e Jens e la cosa è stata molto stancante. Ma poi sono emersi i due ragazzi (erano amici) e puoi credermi che è stato un grande risveglio. E 'stato emozionante, e all’improvviso tutta la band si sentiva fresca e pieno di energia.

1989: esce “Death Or Glory” con la stessa lineup del disco precedente, il segno che forse i Running Wild hanno finalmente trovato una formazione stabile in grado di dare continuità al percorso musicale della band, cosa che purtroppo come vedremo non sarà così poiché dopo poco tu lascerai insieme a Finley e Rolf rifonderà metà band che da “Blazon Stone” in poi non troverà più pace. Raccontaci i tuoi ultimi momenti vissuti in seno alla band.




Beh, abbiamo fatto alcuni concerti in Scandinavia, Stoccolma, Helsinki, per esempio, che offrivano un sacco di divertimento per me. Ma ascoltando l’intro prima di iniziare a suonare sentivo dentro di me che era arrivato il mio tempo e a essere onesti mi sentivo un po 'triste.

A questo punto la tua avventura con i Running Wild si conclude; correggimi se sbaglio Majk, tu abbandonasti dopo la fine del tour di Death Or Glory, non prima di averci regalato un ultimo sussulto di gioia con lo show di Dusseldorf 1989 immortalato sull’ormai introvabile e mitologica videocassetta “Death Or Glory Tour 89” da cui ne fu estratto anche un cd live bootleg anch’esso oggetto di collezionismo. Quali furono le ragioni che ti spinsero a lasciare la band?



Non posso dirlo. Con Rolf ho un accordo di non parlare in pubblico, mi spiace. Non mancherò di tenere fede al codice come promesso.

Dopo la tua dipartita dalla band non si è avuto più tue notizie musicalmente parlando, ovvero sia non ti si è più visto in nessuna band…fino ai giorni di oggi. Cosa hai fatto in tutto questo tempo lontano dal mondo della musica?


Durante il tour di Death Or Glory (e prima) avevo iniziato a sviluppare la mia abilità come programmatore, e ho deciso di continuare. Per due anni ho suonato in una cover band dei Sex Pistols, solo per divertimento e pratica. Poi ho iniziato a studiare medicina per due anni, fino a quando ho scoperto di non essere del tutto d'accordo con la medicina moderna. Così sono tornato ai computer e divenni un manager IT in una azienda di telecomunicazioni per circa 4 anni. Dopo di che sono diventato un lavoratore autonomo, che sono ancora oggi.

Attualmente so che stai lavorando ad un progetto che ti riporta all’interno del music business, un progetto ambizioso come tu stesso mi dicesti privatamente, ce ne vuoi parlare?


Sicuro. Mi ero annoiato dopo 15 anni di lavorare con i computer, visto che ancora mi sento un musicista. Poi ho incontrato il mio nuovo amore Mel e ho scoperto che lei è una buona e appassionata cantante. Dopo breve tempo abbiamo pensato di costituire una nuova band, e la cosa mi ha fatto molto felice. La band si chiama D'Orca (prima che me lo chiedi: il nome della la mia ragazza è Mel Dorca-Ruiz, il che può spiegare il nome dato alla band). Proprio ora sto scrivendo canzoni e registrando presso il mio home studio, e Mel canta con il cuore. Vi è un altro cantante uomo, un tastierista, un bassista e un batterista, naturalmente. In questo momento non ne sono certo, ma forse prenderò anche un altro chitarrista nella band, dipende se ne troverò uno buono. Potrebbero essere necessari ancora sei mesi per finire tutto, ma poi saremo pronti a vedere cosa succede.

Sul tuo sito personale, trovabile all’indirizzo   http://www.myspace.com/majkmoti , scrutando tra le varie foto che sei un appassionato arciere che frequenta le rievocazioni storico medievali, è una passione che hai sempre avuto o solo di recente hai scoperto questa tua vocazione di immergerti in un tempo che fu?

Ho iniziato a farlo nel 2001. Mia figlia lo sta facendo ormai da molti anni, la mia ragazza è stata anche nel suo gruppo ma ora ne è uscita, e così ho iniziato anche io. Mi piace molto fare questo e lo faccio ogni anno in estate.

Hai qualche rimpianto riguardo a quanto hai fatto in passato?



No, nessuno. Bene o male, tutto fa parte della mia esperienza di vita e ha contribuito a quello che sono adesso. Poiché sto molto bene con me stesso, non mi rammarico di nulla. Mi considero una buona e onesta persona, quindi non c’è nulla di cui rammaricarsi.

Ti faccio una domanda cattiva; come vedi oggi l’operato dei Running Wild? Ti dico la mia personalmente, da fan accanito quale sono stato e sono tutt’ora vedo una band anonima, con un’identità persa e intenta più a scimmiottare gli idoli d’infanzia di Rock’n’Rolf che non a seguire la propria strada. Le produzioni di plastica degli ultimi dischi poi non fanno che peggiorare questa situazione e confermare se mai ce ne fosse stato il bisogno che ormai i Running Wild sono solo il progetto personale di Kasparek e basta. Io vedo tutto ciò come ormai un punto di arrivo della band, incapace di proseguire causa carenza di idee. Tu che opinione hai al riguardo?



Purtroppo sono d’accordo con te. Il che è uno dei motivi per cui non li ascolto più. Dal momento che sono stato una parte di loro per 5 anni, sono molto triste per questo ma c’era da aspettarselo dopo tanto tempo. Io sono in contatto con molti fan dei Running Wild oggi, e molte persone la vedono in quel modo. Forse, un giorno, discutendo di questo con Rock'n'Rolf si potrebbe pensare di tornare ai vecchi tempi, chi lo sa?






15) Caro Majk siamo giunti al termine di questa lunga chiacchierata. Io non posso fare altro che ringraziarti della tua disponibilità e opportunità che hai dato a me in primis e anche a tutti i Running Wild fans di ascoltare le parole di un grande che ha contribuito a costruire il successo di u na delle più importanti heavy metal band del pianeta. Hi Majk! First of all let me tell you i’m honoured to talk to you, you belong to important german and european heavy metal musician in history, mostly talkin’ about people who always loved the 80’s power metal.you’ve been for a long time Running wild’s member, crossin’ Golden Age the band lived into Eights,and participative of the most important Rock’ n’ Rolf band album, from Branded to Death or Glory. Can you tell me when you began member of Rolf Kasparek’s band, and what did you do before being part of Running Wild?

I started up with Running Wild in August 1985. Before that I played in several local bands in my hometown as guitarist and singer. Names were Gate, Random, Metallian for instance. Not really worth to be mentioned, but an important time for my development.

2) Rock’ n’ Rolf has always been the main composer , but you gave your contribution, writin’ songs too. Too much gossip about how Rolf didn’t like to involve other member of the band durin’ composition, as if he were the factotum of everything. Since you lived with Rolf, do you agree with these theories people had for many years?

Yes, that is not a theory. Rolf definitely does not like others to write songs for Running Wild, since Preacher left the band. But I managed to slip a few songs through the controls J. Maybe Rolf was afraid that the typical Running Wild sound would be spoiled, if others had too much influence, and maybe he was right, who knows? On the other hand: If you overdo it, you may end right there where Running Wild is now.

3)Let’s try to review Running Wild Story..in 1985 your debut album in “Branded and Exiled”, and you started to play, replacing Gerald after “Preacher Warnecke”. Successively there was a new german metal’s beginning, after Accept and Scorpions. You were one of the first German band to adopt dark lyrics and extreme thematics, beginnin’ for someone like a satanic band. Maybe this thought was dictated by Branded’s cover.. I’m your fan and i’ve never thought in this way, in my opinion this name was wrong. What do you think about?

I believe, that most of the so called satanic stuff has originally been a hoax from Preacher and has never been serious. It may not be commonly known that Preacher studied theology at the time and nowadays is a real preacher!! (By the way: He has a new band again!) I you know all those people in person (Stefan Boriss, Hasche, Rock’n’Rolf, Preacher) you would never believe that any of them had serious satanic intentions, and neither do I. I am an agnostic, an esoteric at best, which also implies that I do not believe in Satan or similar concepts. It was more or less just a fashion at that time, or a sort of society-contradiction.

4) 1987: Finally german success of Running wild with “Under Jolly Roger”, your most descriptive album, and you began famous in other foreign countries, lyrics changed and Thematics were pirates! What do you remember about that times? What were feelings inside the band?

Well, the major feeling was that all that satanic-like stuff was wearing off and became quite boring. We became aware that you have to be different from all the other mainstream dark metal bands in order to be noticed. So Rolf came up with the idea of Metal Pirates, and we all kicked in immediately, just because it was different and because we did not mean that oh so dark stuff in reality. It was a great time, developing all that clothing, the idea behind it, the new sort of lyrics. We were watching pirate movies, reading a lot of books about it and so on. After all we had a lot of fun doing all that. We have been really excited altogether.



5) After this fortune, it’s time for your first live album “Ready for Bording”. As you remember, we started to talk about this album by e-mail, and I told you, there’s a metropolitan legend in my country, which imply this live recordings durin’ a tour with Motley Crue.
Can you publicly say it is wrong?

Yes, I can say that. This album was definitely not recorded on the tour with Motley Crue.

6) There’s an unknown song in this album “Purgatory”, you ironically dedicated to P.M.R.C. Why there has never been the proposal to public that song?

I have no idea why not.

1988: it’s time for “Port Royal”, another success for Running Wild. You were the author of the beautiful Calico Jack song too, which was dedicated to John Rackham, the inventor of Jolly Roger. After this started the first changing line up inside, but you found perfect substitute “Ian Finley”, new drummer, and “Jens Becker” for bass. Can you tell us sensations you felt inside the band after the new line up?

Well, there is a flaw here! The “substitutes” were Stefan Schwarzmann (drums) and Jens Becker (bass). After the recordings of Port Royal, when we were doing the end-mix, Stefan got an offer from UDO and agreed. So he left the band and we found Iain Finlay. All drums on Port Royal are, however, played by Stefan Schwarzmann.

When Stefan and Jens came to the auditions, we had tested a lot of people prior to them and became quite tired of all that. But then those two guys showed up (they were friends) and gave us a wakeup-call, I can tell you. It was exciting, and all of the sudden the band felt fresh and full of energy again.

8) 1989: it’s time for “Death or Glory”,and it’s time to show to fans the new line up bilance, but it wont’ last ‘cause then you decided to leave them and Rolf is gonna set up half band startin’ by “Blazon Stone”. Can you tell us your last good moments lived inside?

Well, there were a few gigs in Scandinavia, Stockholm, Helsinki for instance, which offered a lot of fun for me. But listening to the intros before we started playing I already knew deep inside, that my time had come, and so I have been more or less a bit sad, to be honest.

9) your adventure with Running wild is over, tell me if i’m wrong, you left band after the end of Death and glory tour, but before you gave us as present the last joy, durin’ the show in Dusseldorf in 1989,for all collectors “Death or Glory tour 89” is unavailable! What happened? Why did you leave band?

That I cannot say. Rolf and I have a standing agreement not to talk about that in public, I’m sorry. I will keep to that code as promised.

10) after departure of the band, we didn’t have your news anymore, till nowadays no-one else has seen you more inside band. What did you do in this time far from music?

Even on the Death or Glory tour (and before) I had started to develop my skills as a programmer, and I decided to extend that. For two years or so I played in a Sex-Pistols-Revival-Band, just for fun and practice. Then I started to study medicine, which I did for two years, until I discovered that I do not agree with modern medicine at all. So I returned to computers and became an IT manager in a telecom company for about 4 years. After that I became self employed, which I am still today.

11) At present you’re workin’ for a musical project, really ambitious as you admitted time ago, can you talk about it?

Sure J. I’m doing that computer stuff for about 15 years now and have become bored, and still I feel as musician, always did. Then I met my new love Mel and found out, that she is a passionate singer, and a good one. After a short while we both agreed to make up a new band, which made me very happy. The band is called D’Orca (and before you ask: My girl friend’s name is Mel Dorca-Ruiz, which may explain the name). Right now I am writing songs, recording them at my home studio, and Mel is singing her heart out. There is another (male) singer as well, a keyboarder, a bassist and a drummer, of course. I’m not quite sure right now, but maybe I will also take another guitarist into the band, it depends on finding a good one. It might take another six months to get everything done, but then we will be ready to hit the stages and see what happens.

12) into your blog which is http://www.myspace.com/majkmoti, lookin’ at your photo gallery i realized you love so much the historical mediaeval events since you’re an archer and you like bein’ a part of it. How long have you had this passion?


I started doing that in 2001. My daughter is doing it for many years now, my girl friend at that time was also in her group, and so I kicked in. That former girl friend is gone now, but I still love all that stuff and still do it every year in summer.

13) do you have any kind of remorse about what you did in your past?

Not at all. Good and bad, everything is part of my life-experience and contributed to what I am now. Since I am quite ok with myself, I don’t regret anything. I consider myself a decent and honest person, so there is not much to regret anyway J.

14) a bad question: what’s your opinion about the actual work of Running Wild? in my personal opinion, I see an anonymous band, with a lost identity, without character and still intended to follow childhood idols of Rock’ n’ Rolf; the last album confirm that Running Wild are only a personal project of Kasparek; they have idea no more
what is your point of view?

Unfortunately I have to agree with you. That is one of the reasons why I did not listen to them anymore. Since I have been a part of it for 5 years, I am sort of sad about that, but have also expected it for a long time. I am in discussion with many Running Wild fans nowadays, and many many people see it that way. Maybe I will, one day, discuss that with Rock’n’Rolf and we might think about going back to the old times, who knows?
