WHITESNAKE     Zurigo     16-11-2008



Ok, un concerto singolo dei Whitesnake possiede un phatos che non è minimamente paragonabile ad un festival, questo comunque in generale , di qualsiasi band si tratti.
Ad un concerto singolo, il pubblico è tutto per la band, i rodie sono hanno tutti la t-shirt degli Whitesnake, la security ha il pass con la scritta Whitesnake, sul biglietto ci sta scritto Whitesnake, tutte le strumentazioni dall’a alla z sono dei Whitesnake, ecc…Questo è quello che cercavo, quando mi è arrivata la notizia di un loro concerto da headliner a Zurigo mi sono detto questo è il concerto che più mi interessa dell’autunno 2008!
Sono qui che mi accingo a scrivere il terzo report dell’anno per quanto riguarda il Serpente Bianco e non lo dico perché ciò mi annoia anzi, un concerto di Coverdale e soci mi eccita sempre come fosse la prima volta. 
Li avevo già visti  all’opera  2 volte quest’anno, alla Wembley Arena di Londra in Maggio (memorabile) e a Padova lo scorso Luglio. Da tempo si sapeva che gli Whitesnake avrebbero fatto un tour tedesco invernale co-headliner con Alice Cooper ma in realtà il vero headliner del tour è Alice Cooper e io sinceramente di andare fino in Germania per vedere Alice headliner non ne avevo davvero voglia. Mi sarei rimosso dall’Italia solo per un concerto singolo degli Whitesnake che pareva non esserci, poi all’improvviso su Whitesnake Italia leggo la notizia del concerto a Zurigo del 16 Novembre e mi dico: allora cambia tutto!
Niente al mondo mi avrebbe trattenuto dal vedermi Coverdale e soci headliner in Svizzera, neppure i 1200 km che mi sono dovuto fare (la metà ha guidato Mimmo di whitesnake italia) per arrivare in quel di Zurigo.
Pensate che sono partito alle 7.00 del mattino (Domenica) e sono rientrato alle 6,30 del mattino successivo!!! A Milano ho incontrato Mimmo, Daniela e Fabrizio con i quali ho condiviso il viaggio e l'intera giornata.
Giornata splendida (alla faccia delle previsioni del sabato sera che davano “molto nuvoloso e visibilità pessima”) e nessuno problema ad arrivare a Zurigo, il difficile è stato raggiungere la location ma per fortuna Daniela parla il tedesco per cui dopo un po’ di impazzamento abbiamo raggiunto il luogo del concerto e qui la prima sorpresa! Non c’era manco l’ombra di un manifesto o di qualcosa di simile che pubblicizzasse l’evento, in poche parole questa data serviva a Coverdale e soci per collaudare il prossimo tour tedesco ed era ad appannaggio di pochi intimi.
Eravamo molto attratti da questa location ma soprattutto perché si trattava di un ambiente piccolo che ci avrebbe permesso (logicamente arrivando presto) di raggiungere la prima fila e di goderci il concerto molto più che in spazi dispersivi come fu quello di Padova. Quello che non immaginavamo era la bellezza della palazzina, una villa in classico stile svizzero adibita per metà a ristorante/bar e il resto ai concerti (vedi foto). In Italia siamo abituati (per concerti in luoghi relativamente piccoli) a capannoni industriali, tendoni ecc…e in luoghi orribili sperduti tra le varie fabbriche nelle periferie lontani dalle città. Qua invece eravamo nel pieno centro di Zurigo e in una palazzina magnifica…Certo che la temperatura era davvero tosta, almeno una decina di gradi meno che in Italia, nell’attesa stavamo congelando. Per fortuna come ho detto nella palazzina c’era un bar e così abbiamo passato un’oretta la dentro al caldo, poi ci siamo fatti un po’ di fila e siamo entrati in pole-position, prima fila centrali! Dimenticavo che durante l’attesa in fila abbiamo conosciuto Rise (colui che ha segnalato il concerto su WS Italia) e Amedeo di Roma.
Il locale comininciava a riempirsi e per quanto fosse piccolo direi che almeno un migliaio di persone erano presenti, in poche parole c’era il tutto esaurito!
In orario aprono i Kharma, la band svizzera di supporto che non è sembrata  malvagia ma noi non vedevamo l’ora che finissero il loro show! Dopo una mezz’oretta scarsa si ode l’intro e pochi attimi dopo sulle note del Riff pazzesco di “Best Years” ( nella recensione a Good to Be Bad  lo scorso aprile dissi che sarebbe stata dura togliere a Best Years lo scettro di canzone più bella del 2008, oggi a fine novembre confermo!) fa la sua entrata in scena Mr David Coverdale!
Esecuzione magistrale e con un Coverdale i gran forma (fisicamente un po’ meno, ha messo su una discreta pancetta), come pure gli altri. Pubblico esaltatissimo fin da subito e come una cannonata segue la sempre verde “Fool For Your Loving” che precede la bellissima “Can You Hear The Wind Blows” altro estratto dal capolavoro Good To Be Bad, recente vincitore del premio di Classic Rock Magazine (la più autorevole rivista al mondo per ciò che riguarda Hard Rock e HM) come miglior album del 2008! Coverdale con un pò di meritata vanità si rivolge al pubblico dicendo appunto del premio e la standing ovation è scontata! Ma c’è poco tempo per i discorsi infatti gli Whitesnake attaccano “Love Ain’t No Strangers” da lacrime.
Quello che si nota fin dalle prime canzoni è l’affiatamento tra i vari membri della band, si vede come scherzano tra loro come si guardano e soprattutto come suonano! Due chitarristi così mancavano a Coverdale da tempo, Doug Aldrich è un vero fenomeno e Reb Beach è un "secondo" chitarrista con i controfiocchi! Uriah Duffy il bassista è bravissimo e simpaticissimo sia sul palco che nell’after show. Anche Timothy Drury ha il suo spazio e le sue tastiere si fanno sentire, e infine Chirs Frazier che per molti è stato solo un ripiego per l’abbandono di Tommy Aldrige è in realtà un grandissimo drummer, picchia come pochi e sulla velocità se la potrebbe giocare con molti più blasonati di lui.
Ed è il momento di “Lay Down Your Love”, ero molto curioso di ascoltarla in quanto nel concerto di Padova , Coverdale aveva faticato non poco su questo brano ma qua è diverso, riesce a cantarla molto bene. Va detta una cosa su David Coverdale, è uno che non si risparmia un attimo, da tutto ciò che ha dall’inizio alla fine, le sole pause per poter respirare le ha durante i solos. Continua a lanciare acuti altissimi, certo è aiutato dalle eco ma se ne fa uso Halford bè Coverdale ne ha tutto il diritto.
Gli acuti sono suoi su questo non ci sono dubbi, certo a sentire quel vocione che aveva nel live in London (provate ad ascoltare Space Truckin) fa pensare quanto sia cambiata la sua voce ma del resto gli anni e soprattutto le operazioni alle corde vocali qualcosa vorranno dire.
Non dimentichiamoci neppure che questo signore canta ininterrottamente da circa 35 anni con solo qualche pausa tra gli anni novanta inizio duemila. Prima di sparare assurdità su di lui certe fan di "metal" dovrebbero lavarsi la bocca!
Torniamo al concerto, è il momento dello sgabello per Doug Aldrich e così inizia la versione acustica di “The Deeper The Love” commovente ma l’apice del coinvolgimento arriva con l’esecuzione della ballad per eccellenza “Is This Love”! Per me la più grande ballad di sempre insieme a “Love of my Life” dei Queen e pochissime altre…
Coverdale lascia il palco ai solos dei due chitarristi Reb Beach e Doug ALdrich. Certo che i solo di Blackmore erano altra cosa ma ci si diverte molto anche perché duettano insieme e la durata è breve.
Arriviamo a “A Fool In Love” brano del 2008 ma che poteva essere stato scritto nel 1978! Altro brano capolvoro di Good To Be Bad.
Il solo di batteria è ancora più divertente di quello di chitarra, Frazier picchia duro e non si limita al suo compitino ma è autore di una prestazione maiuscola! Grande.
Altro momento memorabile con “Ain’t Gonna Cry No More” tratta da un certo album intitolato Ready’n’Willing, qualcuno non lo conosce? A ruota LEI, “Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City”, la canzone che per prima ha scatenato i fans dei Whitesnake nei loro concerti dei seventies! Il pubblico la canta perfettamente, compresi tutti noi. Un attimo di tregua e arriva il brano che più di ogni altro fa letteralmente saltare in aria gli spettatori “Give Me All Your Love”. La stessa cosa era capitata alla Wembley Arena di Londra in Giugno e a Padova a Luglio, un vero terremoto di Hard Rock! Ci apprestiamo al gran finale con la sempreverde “Here I Go Again” , ogni volta che l’ascolto ripenso a quel video memorabile del 1982…
Ed ecco la vera sorpresa della serata, l’esecuzione per intero del capolavoro “Soldier of Fortune” dall’album Stormbringer dei Deep Purple targato 1975!
Nonostante qualche lacrimuccia sugli occhi di Coverdale , il riff micidiale di “Still Of The Night” ci riporta al sound più heavy della band per un finale terremotante. Coverdale non si risparmia un solo istante, probabilmente a fine concerto avrà bisogno dell’ossigeno. Questo è un vocalist come pochi, nessuno lo obbliga a tali sforzi ma lui è così da il 200 per 100! E’ il più grande frontman vivente e lo dimostra per tutto il concerto. Pochi riescono a tenere il pubblico in mano come lui. Da non sottovalutare il chitarrista Doug Aldrich che è un vero genio della chitarra e non solo per i suoi assoli bellissimi ma anche a livello di songwriting in fatti molto merito per i brani di Good To Be Bad è anche suo! Unico momento più nervoso è stato sul finale quando sono cominiciati a volare i plettri. Uno svizzero dietro di noi alto oltre 1,90 ci ha fregato due plettri, il primo quasi dalle mani di Mimmo e il secondo a me. Poco dopo Chris Frazier lancia una bacchetta immediatamente ho fatto un salto pazzesco e sono riuscito a precedere lo spilungone che dopo qualche strattonata ha desistito.
Dopo lo show Doug Aldrich ha indicato a Mimmo dove incontrarlo e così è uscito dai camerini, è stato gentilissimo. Mi ha chiesto il nome e ha detto che avrebbe visto From Burn to Now il prima possibile, ci siamo fatti la foto poi è andato a chiamare gli altri, purtroppo il solo Coverdale non è uscito ma direi che ci possiamo accontentare con questi grandissimi musicisti.
Unica tristezza è pensare che esistono persone (che purtroppo scrivono pure sul web) che non conoscono questa grandissima band che da oltre trent’anni cavalca le scene Hard Rock e non solo, sempre in prima linea!

Whitesnake live in Zurich, 16/11/2008 


All right, a single Whitesnake gig has a phatos which is not comparable with any festival, although this is also valid for any other band in the world! On a single concert the audience is all for the band which plays, the crew has the band t-shirt, even the security. The ticket shows the name of the band, the instruments and so on...this is what I was looking for when I first heard about the news of a Whitesnake headlining concert in Switzerland. I immediately though that would have been the most interesting concert of this autumn for me!
This is the third Whitesnake report I write within this year, and I do not say that because I'm tired of seeing that band live in concert, on the contrary every single gig made by Coverdale is unique and gives me energy like if every time is my first time. As I said, this is the third time within a year, before this event I had the occasion of seeing them live at the Wembley Arena together with Def Leppard (they were headlining that night) in May 2008, and than in Padova two months later. I already knew at that time they would have had some concerts supporting Alice Cooper in Germany during November, but that solution didn't fit for me! I thought I would have moved from Italy only in the case of a single headlining concert by Whitesnake, and that is what it happened!
No one in the world would have kept me far from Zurich, even the 1200km distance which divide my home city from the gig location (half of the distance has been covered by Mimmo from Whitesnake Italia). I left my home at seven o'clock on Sunday and I came back at half past 6 the morning after. In Milan I met with Mimmo, Daniela and Fabrizio with whom I shared the whole adventure! Really nice day and absolutely no problem at all reaching the city; a bit more difficult has been the research of the place were the concert was located but fortunately Daniela is able to speak German so after a while we reached what was supposed to be the location. Here we had our first surprise: absolutely no advertisement, no posters...after, we discovered that gig was planned in order to train the band for the forthcoming German tour with Alice Cooper, so the place was very little and few people were admitted!
We were very attracted by the location for these reasons, and because we would have reached the first row easily than in Padova! What we actually didn't know was the beauty of the location, an old classic Swiss cottage used both as restaurant and for concerts (in Italy we have very different places for concerts, far from cities and not within them!). Anyway, the temperature was low, so we were freezing during the wait. We entered the bar, stayed there for a while then we decided to get into the queue (we met Rise, the one who talked about that concert on the WS Italia forum, and Amedeo from Rome). We entered and we reached exactly the place we wanted to reach: first row, central, exactly in front of David Coverdale. Slowly the place started welcoming many people, we can say at around one thousand people were attending the gig, which for the capability of the place was quite enough.
Kharma from Switzerland opened the concert. The band was good, but we were with our heads thinking about what would have come shortly. After half an hour we heard the intro and few seconds after the opening riff of “Best Years” (on the “Good to be bad” review back in April, I wrote it would have been hard not to think about that song as the best one of the year, and now I can confirm that), and the apparition of David Coverdale! Nothing to say about the performance on that song (even if physically some fat seems to appear!) both from David and the rest of the band. The audience was already gone mad, and the band immediately started another song, an evergreen from the Whitesnake discography, “Fool for your loving”, followed by “Can you hear the wind blow” another song from the latest album (recently nominated as the best one of the year by Classic Rock magazine). At the end of the song Coverdale speaks about this recent award, proud of the work he has made with the other guys of the band. Than, “Love ain't no strangers” begun...
What I really appreciate of this band is the feeling within the member of the band themselves. Coverdale missed guitarists as the ones he now has in the line-up. Aldrich is a true phenomenon and Reb Beach is a great second guitarist. Uriah Duffy is a great bass player and really nice person both on the stage and off. Timothy Dury has his own space, keyboards are an important element for Whitesnake, and Chris Frazier (for many people just a replacement drummer after the departure of Tommy Aldridge) is a great drummer, both skilled and able to speed.
Now it's time for “Lay down your love”, I was really curious hearing that song because at the Padova gig back in July David seemed to have some difficulties playing it, but here all troubles seemed to be disappeared. I must say one thing about David Coverdale: he is a singer which plays from the beginning to the end with very few moments of break, just during guitar and drums solos. He constantly reaches high-pitches and if sometimes has the help with some echoes, I think he has the right to do so! Of course, we can't compare what he is now and how he sung many years ago on the “Live in London” (try listening to “Space Truckin'”), but time has passed, and even some surgery! If we think he has been singing for more than 35 years with few stops during late 90's and early 00's. Many metal fan should seriously shut up before saying something about David!
Coming back to the concert, now it's time for some acoustic songs, like “The deeper the love” and than “Is this love”, best ballad ever written by men together with “Love of my life” by Queen. Than David left the stage, both Beach and Aldrich started their solos, really funny and not so long. Back again to 2008 with “A fool in love”, it could have been written back in 1978. Another masterpiece track from the latest release of the band. Drum solos was pretty funny too, Chris beats with force on the drum, a true muscle performance for him!
Another memorable moment was the execution of “Ain't gonna cry no more” followed by another evergreen, “Ain't no love in the heart of the city”, the song which first unleashed WS fans back in the 70's. A moment of break and than here we are with “Give me all your love”, the same happened both in London and Padova and in both cases the audience went wild! The final is put in the hands of “Here I go again” (every time I listen to it I remember the historic 1982 video). And...surprise, the band decided to perform in its entirety the Deep Purple masterpiece called “Soldier of fortune”, taken from the “Stormbringer” album, 1975. After some tears appearing on Coverdal's face, the sound came back heavier than ever with “Still of the night”. Coverdale gives the public all he has got from his throat, he is a great frontman, one of the biggest actually living, and he shows is greatness on every Whitesnake concert. Very few people are able to keep audience the way he does. And not to underrate is the performance of Aldrich, guitar genius who contributed a lot on the songwriting process of “Good to be bad”.
Only negative moment of the evening has been the throw of the guitar picks...we took two of the but a big Swissman 1,90 mt tall stole them from our hands. Immediately after Chris throws his drum stick, I started to fly and took it together with the Swiss behind me, but after some “fight” he left the drum stick to me!
After the show Doug Aldrich told Mimmo were we had the chance to see the band. He has been very nice with us, also all the other members of the band (Coverdale, of course, was not here!). Doug asked me my name and told me he will soon see our web site. We made some pictures together with him and the other guys than we left the place. The only sad thing is that there are lot of people writing in the web about many other bands from the past, but they actually do not know anything about this glorious band which plays music from more than 30 years.
Another 7 hours of driving back to my home.
